Alemtuzumab induced thyrotoxicosis in a patient undergoing autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant for multiple sclerosis

Esdaile Harriet , Hinton Richard , Sheridan Helena , Rogosic Srdan , Pavlu Jiri , Olavarria Eduardo , Gabriel Ian

Case History: A 37 year old female underwent an elective autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT) for multiple sclerosis (MS), with cyclophosphamide and anti-thymocyte (ATG) conditioning. She had previously received two doses of alemtuzumab, with the last dose 12 months prior to ASCT. Baseline thyroid function was normal pre atemluzumab. 3 months prior to dose 2 (18 months post first dose), subclinical hyperthryoidism was present with a raised TSH antibody (0.08 unit/ml). There ...

Adipocytokines dynamics in patients operated for rectal neoplasm

Florescu Alexandru , Branisteanu Dumitru , Grigoras Ioana , Bilha Stefana , Dimofte Gabriel , Scripcariu Dragos V

Adipose tissue performs an important endocrine role, mediated by hormones (adipocytokines) which are specifically secreted by the adipocytes. Epidemiological data consistently show an association between weight gain and the risk of colorectal cancer in adults. This observation led to the evaluation of a possible linking role of adipocytokines with cancer pathogenesis. There are several studies that associate adipocytokines with colorectal malignancy, but few data about patients...

PCSK9 inhibitors effects on lipid profile in familial hypercholesterolemia in a specific Lipid Unit: experience in first year commercialization

Gonzalez-Molero Inmaculada , Doulatram Viyu , Marin Monserrat Gonzalo , Abuin Jose , Morillas Virginia , Olveira Gabriel , Tinahones Francisco

Objective: Analyse the features of first patients treated with PCSK9 inhibitors in a specific Familial dyslipidemia Unit and the effects on lipid profile in first months of treatment.Material and methods: Data from patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia treated with PCSK9 inhibitors were reviewed. Clinical data, physical examination and analytical data were collected at baseline, one month and 3 months. Results: Da...

Evolution of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis followed in a nutrition and endocrinology specific unit during 3 years

Gonzalez-Molero Inmaculada , Gonzalo Monserrat , Doulatram Viyu , Abuin Jose , Tinahones Francisco , Olveira Gabriel

Introduction: A high percentage of patients diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) have malnutrition. The nutritional treatment in ALS is essential, affecting muscle strength, quality of life and survival. Objective: To describe the nutritional characteristics of patients evaluated in a specific nutritional Unit in patients with ALS during 3 years.Material and methods: A descriptive study of all patients diagnosed with A...

Novel genetic changes in Autosomal dominant, ACTH independent nacronodular adrenal hyperplasia associated with hypercortisolism and giant adrenals

Munter Gabriel , Altarescu Geona , Beeri Rachel , Berthon Annabel , Faucz Fabio Rueda , Weiss Ruchama , Stratakis Constantine

ACTH independent macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (AIMAH) is a rare cause of Cushing’s syndrome. Both Phosphodiesterase 11A4 (PDE11A4) mutations and inactivating mutations of armadillo repeat containing 5(ARMC5) have been associated with familial AIMAH. A family with autosomal dominant AIMAH was studied trying to elucidate the involved genetic basis. Methods and results: Adrenal hypercortisolism with giant bilateral AH was diagnosed in three adult me...

Introduction: Acute pancreatitis induced by hypertriglyceridemia is a severe condition and its management is complicated.Case report: We present a case of severe acute pancreatitis induced by hypertriglyceridemia secondary to lipoprotein lipase -LPL- deficiency (188 Gly-Glu mutation, LPL undetectable activity) in a pregnant patient with gestational diabetes. The patient was sent to our Lipid Unit in the 13th gestation’ week. Th...

Validation of self-reported oral health measures for predicting periodontitis among adult Filipinos with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Lo Tom Edward , Lagaya-Estrada Ma. Cristina , Jimeno Cecilia , Jasul Gabriel

Diabetes mellitus is currently being recognised as a global health problem. The likelihood of periodontal disease among diabetics is thrice and progresses rapidly when uncontrolled. Diabetics were less likely to see a dentist than to seek consult with a doctor for diabetes care. A cheap and easy way of clinical assessment via self-reported oral health questionnaire would be of great use especially in a developing country like The Philippines. This study aims to validate self-r...

Role of thyroglobulin as a predictor of the evolution of disease in differentiated thyroid cancer

Biagetti Betina , Zafon Carles , Garcia-Burillo Amparo , Velasco Monica , Obiols Gabriel , Castell Joan , Mesa Jordi

Aim: Investigate, in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) if thyroglobulin (Tg) values, immediately before and six months post radioiodine ablation are good predictors of disease progression.Materials and methods: Basal Tg values (Tg-B) and rhTSH stimulated Tg (Tg-S) before ablation (0) and 6 months later (6) from 142 DTC patients, with post-surgical ablation therapy between 2003 and 2009 with a follow up of 5 years, were analysed.<p cla...

Efficacy and safety of an outpatient low radioide dose for remnant thyroid ablation in low risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC)

Obiols Gabriel , Garcia-Burillo Amparo , Zafon Carles , Castell Joan , Mesa Jordi

In PTC, radioiodine required dose for thyroid remnant ablation is uncertain. Recent works show that low doses may be sufficient for low risk patients.Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of thyroid remnant ablation in patients with low-risk PTC by using 1100 MBq (30 mCi) outpatient doses.Materials and methods: Twenty-five patients (24 women, 55 years-old mean age, range 34–77) referred for ablation of postsurgical thyroid ...

Gonzalez-Molero Inmaculada , Vallejo Rosario , Omiste Antonio , Olveira Gabriel , Tinahones Francisco

Objective: To determine the characteristics of patients with familiar hypercholesterolemia studied in a specific unit of lipids.Material and methods: A descriptive study of patients followed in our unit over the last 16 years diagnosed with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HFH) or familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH).Results: Data from 111 patients were analyzed: 66 with HFH and 45 with FCH.Featu...
